Back to 1947 - In post war Japan, where groceries and clothing were often hard to come by the company carved its niche, and soon ventured into selling used denim, adding this to their growing appeal.
Later, Yonehachi began importing used denim from the United States, repairing and altering them and selling them into retailers in Ameyoko - a popular shopping and market destination in Tokyo.
With their popularity quickly rising and demand for denim increasing, the Tsunemi Yonehachi Shop began producing their own denim. Whilst the imported American denim was firm, discoloured and often prone to shrinkage, Yonehachi endeavoured to create his own denim jeans line that catered to the Japanese customer - and thus EDWIN Jeans as we know it today was born.
Since 1960 EDWIN have produced market leading denim styles, exploring various cuts, silhouettes and styles to suit their varying consumers. Their first style was the EDWIN One Wash 359BF. Developed using the brands signature 16oz Rainbow Selvedge denim, this style marked the beginning of the brands love affair with producing innovative denim styles that boasted longevity, comfort and prolonged fit.
As the brand moved into their 10th year of producing denim, they began to produce more fashion-led styles, gaining them attention outside of Japan, with major markets for the first time. Fast forward to the 80s and 90s and EDWIN had become a household name for quality denim across the Western world, just as it had been for many years previous in large parts of Asia.
Now, in the 21st century, EDWIN not only continue to produce world leading denim styles, but they also offer impressive seasonal apparel collections, to compliment their denim offering.
